The £1.7 million development at Ashleigh Church of England Primary has provided a new hall, community room, classroom and playground and ancilliary facilities.

It was completed on time and on budget and will be officially opened at 2pm on Friday (June 27) by the Chairman of Devon County Council, John Rawlinson.

Pupils from the school will demonstrate to guests how they use their new hall for learning.

Headteacher Mark Henderson said the new buildings had fostered a real sense of pride in the children and staff.

"The results have started to transform our school," he said.

"We now have a modern, multi-purpose hall and kitchen, a good sized, flat playground, a welcoming foyer and enhanced office and reception, improved visitor's entrance and parking, a light and bright nursery classroom and a well used community room that offers a range of services to our families and community."

In its last Ofsted report, Ashleigh won high praise from education inspectors who said every area of school life was good or better.

Mr Henderson said: "These changes are ensuring that our building keeps up with the first class, modern learning that is happening within its walls and has fostered a pride in the children and staff."

Devon County Council leader Brian Greenslade, who is the local councillor for the area, said: "Having first become the county councillor for this part of Barnstaple in 2005, this was one of the first issues I picked up and I am delighted that such quick progress as been made.

"The recent investment by the county council in Ashleigh Road School has made such a positive difference to a school, which is in a constrained location. I hope the children, staff and governors will be pleased with the results."
